Welcome! The answer, as you might have guessed, is abscission. Okay, well maybe not that particular word but maybe a word like autumn. Abscission means to cut off or discard.
In a sentence:
The abscission of the young leaves of the plant occured during an infestation of bugs.
I think maybe 'scissors' came from that word. Just a hunch...
The phrase, Folium autumnus, means, 'the leaf autumn' which is a reference to what many consider a yearly ritual; the falling of leaves.
